Dr. Rock Jackson is largely a self taught artist whose media are oil, charcoal, and pastel. Favorite subjects include flyfishing, western ranch and cowboy scenes in addition to his trademark Plein-Air western landscapes. Rock was born and raised in Southeastern Utah and educated at Stanford University and the University of Michigan Medical School where he completed his internship and residency. Rock retired in 1991 from a 35 year specialty surgical practice in Tucson. He retired from active practice in 2003, but retains a posistion as Clinical Professor of Surgery at University of Arizona Medical School. He learned free hand sketching from his father, who was a gifted amateur artist, and in his later years, Rock studied art formally under a number of distinguished Western artists. These included extended study with artist Phil Starke as well as Loren Entz, Robert (Shoofly) Shufelt, acclaimed pencil artist, Lorenzo Chavez, pastel landscapes, T. Allen Lawson, oil landscapes, Kenn Backhaus, plein-air, and Skip Whitcomb, plein-air. previous::next |
